Most owners booking daycare for the first time default to a full day, because that's the option that comes to mind first. It's often the right call — but not always, and a half day isn't a lesser version of the same thing. It's a different tool for a different kind of week.
Why a full day usually makes sense
- A standard workday where your dog would otherwise be home alone from morning to evening
- High-energy dogs who need more than a couple of hours to actually settle
- Dogs already comfortable in group play, with the stamina for a full rotation of activity and rest
- Any day you're commuting both ways anyway — one drop-off and one pickup is simpler than two
When a half day is the better fit
- A puppy or senior whose energy and attention run out well before evening
- A dog newer to group play, where a shorter session is less overwhelming while they build confidence
- A half-day work schedule or a day with errands bookending it, rather than a full 9-to-5
- Easing a dog back in after time away, before committing to a full day again
It's not just about your schedule
The instinct is to pick based on how long you're out of the house, but the more useful question is how long your dog can genuinely enjoy group play before it tips from fun into tiring. That's exactly why a real assessment before the first day matters — it tells you (and us) which length actually suits your dog, rather than guessing from their age or breed alone.
You don't have to commit to one or the other
Plenty of our regulars mix it — half days on lighter weeks, full days when a workday runs long, with the same small, temperament-matched group and built-in rest periods either way. There's no penalty for switching it up as your schedule or your dog's needs change.
Curious which length fits your dog? Our dog daycare offers both half- and full-day options, starting with a short assessment so we can tell you honestly which one suits your dog's play style. Get in touch to set it up, or read how we match puppies to the right group from day one.
