Every boarding facility in Northern Virginia has the same calendar problem: demand isn't spread evenly. It stacks up around school holidays, and the families who call two weeks before Thanksgiving mostly hear the same word — full. Here's how to stay ahead of it.
The realistic timeline
- Thanksgiving & winter holidays: book 6–8 weeks ahead. These are the first dates to go, every year.
- Spring break: 4–6 weeks ahead.
- Summer weeks (especially around July 4th): 3–4 weeks ahead — longer stays fill the suites fast.
- Ordinary weekends: usually fine a week or two out, but a Friday–Sunday in wedding season can surprise you.
"You're on the list" is not a reservation
The difference between a booking and a hope is paperwork: a written agreement, confirmed dates and a deposit. If a facility can't tell you clearly whether your dates are held, they aren't. At PatiLee a deposit locks your suite — after that, the calendar problem is ours, not yours.
Book the vet before the kennel
The most common last-minute crisis isn't availability — it's vaccinations. If a booster is due in November, a fully-booked vet calendar can undo a perfectly good boarding reservation. When you book your trip, check your dog's vaccine dates the same day.
Holiday stays are better with a warm-up
If your dog has never boarded before, don't let a ten-day December stay be their first experience anywhere. A short trial stay or a few daycare days in October or November means your dog walks into the holidays knowing the people, the routine and the smells.
