Do cats need grooming, or do they handle it themselves?

Cats are famously good at washing themselves — but long-haired, senior and overweight cats often need a hand. When self-grooming is enough, when it isn't, and what a gentle bath and brush-out for a cat actually involves.

Cats have a reputation for handling their own hygiene, and most of the time that reputation is earned — a healthy cat spends a good chunk of the day washing. That instinct is real, but it has limits, and knowing where those limits sit is the difference between a coat that stays in good shape and one that quietly gets away from you.

When self-grooming isn't enough

  • Long-haired cats, where mats form behind the ears, under the legs and around the haunches faster than a tongue can keep up
  • Senior or overweight cats, who often can't twist far enough to reach their back, hindquarters or tail base anymore
  • A cat who's noticeably grooming less than usual — on its own, that's worth a vet visit before anything else, since it's often an early sign something hurts
  • A cat that's gotten into something outdoors or in the garage that licking alone won't fix

What grooming for a cat actually looks like

It's the same philosophy we use for dogs, adapted to a far less willing participant: a warm-water bath with gentle, skin-friendly products, a thorough brush-out to clear loose and matted fur, and a nail trim — never a shave, since a coat does real work regulating temperature and protecting skin, and shaving it off for convenience does more harm than the mat it was meant to solve. The bigger skill is pace, not product: shorter sessions, reading a cat's body language, and stopping well before they reach their limit rather than pushing through to finish faster. Done that way, a nervous cat's second visit is usually calmer than the first.

If your cat's coat has gotten away from you — mats behind the ears, a coat that's lost its shine, more loose hair than usual — or you'd simply rather know than guess, our bath & grooming service is just as gentle with cats as it is with dogs. It pairs naturally with a stay in our dog-free cat boarding lounge, or get in touch and we'll tell you honestly whether your cat needs a hand or just time.
